Advancing coastal environmental stewardship through research, education, and community engagement
Inspiring Stewardship Through Science and Connection
Outer Shores Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to deepening our understanding of coastal ecosystems and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. Through research, education, and community engagement, the Institute aims to inspire meaningful connections between people and the marine environments they rely on.
Our Mission
The mission of Outer Shores Institute is to help protect and care for the British Columbia coast by raising awareness, building connections, and fostering collaboration among tourism operators, local industries, the public, and the scientific and stewardship communities.
What We Do
The Institute’s work is built on three key pillars: Research, Education, and Stewardship.
Scientific Research
Outer Shores Institute supports and conducts research on marine biodiversity, climate change impacts, and the ecological relationships that sustain life along our coastlines. Our research projects focus on understanding the complexities of these ecosystems and informing conservation strategies that protect species, habitats, and cultural heritage. We collaborate with universities, Indigenous knowledge holders, and conservation groups to ensure our work is comprehensive and impactful.
Education & Outreach
Education is at the heart of our mission. We offer immersive learning experiences for tourism guides, students, educators, and the general public, helping them develop a deeper appreciation for marine environments. Through hands-on fieldwork, workshops, and public events, we make scientific knowledge accessible and engaging. Our educational programs are designed to inspire the next generation of stewards and equip them with the skills needed to make a difference.
Community Engagement & Stewardship
Outer Shores Institute recognizes that conservation efforts are most effective when they involve local communities. We work closely with coastal communities, Indigenous leaders, and citizen scientists to promote sustainable practices and habitat restoration efforts. By fostering collaboration and encouraging active participation, we help strengthen the collective responsibility for protecting our oceans and shorelines.
